Sometimes, pain can be treated conservatively. But other times, surgery is needed to resolve symptoms. The doctors at Beverly Oaks Surgery in Sherman Oaks, CA, specialize in pain management surgery to help patients find relief from persistent painful symptoms that don’t respond to conservative approaches.

Pain Management Q & A

Many types of chronic pain that do not respond to more conservative treatment options may be successfully treated with surgery. Sometimes, surgery can be used to address an obvious cause of pain, such as the chronic and often widespread pain from spinal arthritis. But often, treatment is not so obvious, such as when a patient has a chronic pain syndrome like fibromyalgia or chronic regional pain syndrome. In these cases, specific pain management surgeries can be performed to provide long-term resolution of pain.

We treat:

Musculoskeletal pain (primary back)

Musculoskeletal pain is any pain that affects the bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves, with the most common type being lower back pain. It’s caused by injury, overuse, and can also be caused by poor posture or prolonged immobilization.

Treatments:

Pain epidural injections

Used to treat both lower and upper back pain, an epidural steroid can be injected into the lumbar area (for lower back and sciatica pain) or the epidural space surrounding spinal nerve roots (for upper back and neck pain).

Facet nerve blocks

When a group of nerves is causing pain, a nerve-numbing substance may be injected into the affected area of the body as treatment. Facet nerve blocks are those injected into the small joints on either side of the spine in the lower back to help ease back pain.

Intradiscal ablation procedures

A radio wave produces an electrical current that’s used to heat up tissue in the spine, decreasing the pain signals being emitted from that area and reducing discomfort.

Spinal cord stimulators

A small device planted beneath the skin to send a mild electrical pulse to the spinal cord, helping to alleviate back pain.
