Cosmetic Surgery Q&A

Why are facelifts performed?

The face is often the first area of the body to show the signs of aging, developing wrinkles and creases as well as a looser, less toned appearance and a rougher texture, all of which can make a person appear much older than they feel. Years of sun and other types of environmental exposures, weight gains and losses, chronic stress and disease, genetics, hormones, smoking and other issues can contribute to aging in the face and the neck. Facelifts and neck lifts are performed to reduce or eliminate these issues, smoothing out skin and removing excess skin and other tissue while repositioning the muscles so skin looks and feels firmer, smoother, more resilient and more youthful. Facelifts and neck lifts can address a broad array of issues that develop with age, including:

  • Loose, droopy or saggy skin in the face, neck and jowls
  • Wrinkles and creases, including deeper lines that cannot be effectively addressed with fillers and less invasive procedures
  • Lines and wrinkles around the nose, mouth and eyes, including deeper folds around the nose, mouth and chin
  • Sagging under the chin

Facelifts and neck lifts are perhaps the best option for more advanced signs of aging as well as for people who have signs of aging across multiple areas of the face.

How is the breast augmentation procedure performed?

Breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis, which means patients can go home the same day. Once the patient has been anesthetized, an incision will be made to enable the implant to be inserted. Incisions can be made around the nipple, in the crease beneath the breast or in the armpit, and incision location will be made based on the implant type and size and other factors. A pocket will be created in the tissue behind the breast to hold and support the implant. The pocket can be located in front of or behind the chest muscle. The implant will be inserted into the pocket, and if a saline implant is being used, the saline solution will be injected into the implant to achieve the proper size. Silicone implants already contain the gel when they are implanted. Once the implants are in place, they will be visually evaluated to ensure their placement is ideal and then the incisions will be closed and a bandage will be applied to aid in healing. Breast augmentation can be performed for different reasons, including:

  • Enhancing the appearance of very small breasts
  • Balancing the size and shape of breasts that don't match
  • Replacing tissue volume lost during childbirth or after breastfeeding
  • Replacing volume lost following significant weight loss
  • Improving self-confidence

The reasons for breast augmentation are very personal, and objectives should be discussed and carefully considered prior to surgery to ensure the best results and highest levels of satisfaction.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical operation that is used to slim, reshape, and contour the body by extracting excess fat deposits. The procedure can be combined with other operations such as a facelift. Liposuction can be used for removing fat deposits in the:

  • Abdomen and waist
  • Calves and ankles
  • Cheeks, neck, and chin
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Inner knee
  • Chest area
